Choosing a walking stick shouldn't be complicated, but with so many options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. The right stick makes a real difference to your confidence and comfort. The wrong one sits unused in the corner.

In this blog we share everything you need to know about getting the right size stick for you or a loved one. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at store@ooak.co

Getting the Height Right

The most important factor is height. Too short and you'll find yourself hunched over.  Too tall and your arm will be at an uncomfortable angle. Both of these will put strain on your shoulders and back.

How to measure: Stand naturally in your usual shoes with your arms relaxed by your sides. Measure from the floor to your wrist crease. That's your ideal stick height.

If you already have a stick that feels comfortable, just measure its length!

Standard Walking Stick Sizes

Our walking sticks come in three standard sizes:

Small (80cm) for heights 5'4" to 5'7" (162-170cm)

Medium (85cm) for heights 5'8" to 5'11" (171-180cm)

Large (90cm) for heights 6'0" to 6'3" (181-190cm)

If you’re between sizes, choose the taller option. It's easier to adapt to a stick that's slightly too tall than one that's too short and this will avoid putting any unnecessary pressure through your wrist.

Should I go for fixed length or adjustable?

We opted to start with fixed length sticks as they’re not only stylistically stronger, but also physically stronger. To maintain a light weight and strong walking stick, Ooak sticks are a fixed length which should be bought to suit you. Generally our customers aren’t changing drastically in height, so the compromises made to allow for it to be adjusted weren’t worth it.

When you're relying on a stick for support, you want something that feels rock solid.

We are always working on improvements for our sticks as well as innovating new products, such as the Kina & Pio, so watch this space! If an adjustable stick is something that you’d be interested in, flick us a message, we’d love to hear from you.

The difference is in the details

The handle is where your hand makes contact all day long, so comfort matters.

Look for ergonomic handles shaped to fit your palm naturally. They distribute pressure evenly rather than creating pressure points, which reduces fatigue. You’ll notice the Uno stick features a simple dip for the hand to rest in, making it super comfortable and natural feeling.

Our handle choice wasn’t only about the best choice for the environment, post-consumer recycled plastics work well because they don't get slippery when wet and won't crack over time.

The rubber tip at the bottom is a crucial safety feature. A quality rubber tip should grip on any surface (tile, wood, concrete, grass), absorb shock to protect your wrist and shoulder, last for years, and stay quiet.

Why style actually matters

If you're embarrassed by your walking stick, you'll leave it at home. You'll avoid situations where you could use the support. We saw this for ourselves, people we loved who were hesitant to use a stick because they all felt like medical aids, rather than something they could wear with pride.

We give Uno sticks just as much design consideration as we would any other modern product. Elegant, simple and sophisticated design means you’ll use your stick with pride.

Testing the Right Height

Once you have your stick, test it.

Stand naturally with the stick beside you. The top of the handle should align with your wrist crease when your arm is hanging relaxed.

Grip the handle. Your elbow should be bent at roughly 15 to 30 degrees. Not straight, not sharply bent. Walk a few steps. The stick should feel like a natural extension of your stride. You shouldn't have to reach down or bend over.

If you’ve purchased online and your stick isn’t quite how you think it should be, remember we offer free exchanges and shipping. We’re more than happy to get you something that will suit you perfectly.

Making Your Decision

Choosing a walking stick comes down to three things:

1 - Finding the right height for your body.

2 - Working with quality materials that provide reliable support.

3 - A design you'll actually use and wear with pride.

Don't rush it. A walking stick is an investment in your mobility and independence. Take the time to get it right.
