These three terms get used interchangeably but they describe different objects with different purposes. Knowing which one you need makes a real difference.

Walking stick

A walking stick is a mobility aid designed to provide support and stability while walking. It takes weight off one side of the body, improves balance, and helps with uneven ground or recovery from injury or surgery.

Walking sticks are typically used on the side opposite the weaker leg or the side experiencing pain. They have a single point of contact with the ground and a handle designed for extended grip.

Modern walking sticks range from basic aluminium hospital-issue models to designed objects like the ooak Uno, which uses ergonomic handles, hardwood stems, and recycled material components.

Cane

The word 'cane' is used interchangeably with 'walking stick,' particularly in American English. Technically, a cane is a slender stick used for support. The term covers both decorative canes and functional mobility aids.

In everyday use, if someone says they use a cane, they usually mean a walking stick used for mobility support. The difference is mostly semantic, though 'walking stick' tends to be the preferred term in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.

Walking pole

A walking pole is different. It is designed for active use: Nordic walking, hiking, trekking. Walking poles are typically used in pairs, are longer than a walking stick, and have a handle angle and grip strap designed for forward propulsion rather than lateral support.

Walking poles can be useful for people who want to walk longer distances with upper body engagement, but they are not a substitute for a walking stick if you need balance support or relief from joint pain.

Which one do you need?

If you need support for one side of your body either for balance, joint pain, post-surgical recovery, or general stability, a walking stick is what you are looking for.

If you want to improve your walking technique, increase your walking distance, or add upper body engagement to your routine, poles are worth considering.

If someone has recommended a cane, they almost certainly mean a walking stick.

The ooak Uno is a walking stick for everyday use: ergonomic angled handle, responsibly sourced hardwood stem, available in three sizes (Small 80 cm, Medium 85 cm, Large 90 cm).
